The Gunnison High School girls wrestling team competed in Colorado Springs at the Vista Ridge Alpha Female Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 10, placing all four girls in the finals.

The Gunnison High School boys basketball team started off the new year slow, losing their first two games to move to 1-8 on the season.

The Gunnison High School boys wrestling team traveled to Florence on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9-10, to compete in the Mel Smith Wrestling Tournament, placing 11th out of the 28 teams.

The Gunnison High School boys wrestling team started off the new year hot, placing second as a team at the West Grand Invitational in Kremmling on Saturday, Jan. 3.

The Gunnison High School girls wrestling team once again had a successful weekend at the Western Slope Showdown in Montrose. All three girls wrestled in the finals of their brackets. 

The Gunnison High School boys wrestling team had another strong showing at last weekend’s Western Slope Showdown tournament. Six wrestlers made it to the second day of the tournament, and all six of those boys placed in their brackets.

The Gunnison High School girls basketball team moved to 2-3 on the season after going 1-2 in their three games last week. After losses to Buena Vista High School on Tuesday, Dec. 11, and North Fork High School on Friday, Dec. 12, the Cowboys finished the week with a win over Grand Valley High School on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Indianapolis – The 46th annual Midwest Classic closed Sunday with Western Colorado wrestling placing 22nd out of 47 teams with 41.5 points.

Western Colorado put on a scoring display Saturday in a dominating 98-72 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over visiting Regis University, making half of its field goals from behind the arc.

The Gunnison High School swim team, though small in number, had a strong start to the season. Across two meets last week, the girls placed in the top three in six events.

Despite a brand new starting lineup, the Gunnison High School girls basketball team rode stingy defense and strong second half play to a 1-1 start to their season last week.

The Gunnison boys played two tournament games last week against the Delta Panthers and the Pagosa Springs Pirates on Friday and Saturday. The Cowboys dropped the first game 63-34 to the Delta Panthers. In Saturday’s game the Cowboys lost to the Pagosa Springs Pirates by a score of 73-45. 

Western Colorado staged a second-half rally from a 12-point deficit to earn a 67-61 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road win over Colorado State Pueblo behind 21 points each from Alyssa Eckroth and Ivey Schmidt.

A double-digit halftime evaporated over second-half action, but visiting Western Colorado hit clutch free throws in the closing seconds to hold on for a 62-60 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over host Colorado State Pueblo Saturday afternoon.

Gunnison High School Cowboys boys and girls wrestling teams each had strong showings at this year’s opening tournament, the Wolverine Classic. The boys team took first place overall.

The Elks Hoop Shoot free throw contest is planned for 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Gunnison High School. The event is organized locally by Gunnison Elks Lodge No. 1623.

Spots on the podium at the state championship are earned on the mat. For all the winning that can be done in the mat room at practice, the Gunnison girl’s wrestling team is looking to prove it in February at Ball Arena. With two-time state place winner Roxie Uhrig and state place winner Romie Uhrig, who is returning from injury, the Cowboys have wrestlers who have walked those steps before.

Aubriel Loken has signed with Colorado Mesa to continue her volleyball career at the collegiate level.

Held scoreless by the Mountaineer defense for three quarters Saturday afternoon, visiting and 10th-ranked UT Permian Basin stormed back in the fourth quarter and overtime to score 21 unanswered points in a 21-15 victory over 15th-ranked Western Colorado in the second round of the NCAA Division II Football Championships.

As the Gunnison boys wrestling team kicks off its season this week with a home dual against Olathe on Thursday, Cody Casebolt will begin a journey he hopes culminates with a state title in February.
