The Gunnison High School girls golf team competed in three golf tournaments over the course of the last week.

The Cowboys traveled to Gypsum on Tuesday, April 7, to play a tournament at Gypsum Creek Golf Course. Head coach Kevin Mickelson brought three girls to the Gypsum Creek Tournament.

The team placed eighth overall with a score of 320.

“It's super nice and a great test to golf and it's long,” said Mickelson. “And it's good for the players to get tested like that.”

Aiden Tomlin placed third individually with a score of 93, Faith Pederson placed 14th with a score of 99 and Lilian Davis placed 50th with a score of 128.

The Cowboys had a break, but were back to the course again on Monday, April 13, in Montrose.

The Cobble Creek Invitational was held at Cobble Creek Golf Course. Mickelson brought five girls and emphasized that it was the first time this year that he was able to bring a top five based on scoring averages this year.

Tomlin was the tournament’s individual champion, shooting an 81.

As a team the Cowboys placed fifth with a score of 289.

Pederson placed ninth individually with a score of 91, Natalia Sabino placed 35th with a score of 117, Althea Stansberry placed 36th with a score of 118 and Norah Abila placed 40th with a score of 120.

“I think they're getting their course legs underneath them a little bit,” said Mickelson when talking about the lower scores. “People don't realize that there is a little bit of conditioning that goes along with walking 18 holes, slinging your bags with you and all that, so I think that's part of it.”

Mickelson also emphasized that the girls are becoming more comfortable playing while others are watching and they’re starting to strike the ball with more confidence.

Only seniors Tomlin and Pederson were able to play in the Black Canyon Invitational in Montrose on Tuesday, April 14, due to SAT testing at school.

The tournament was held at the Black Canyon Golf Course

Tomlin shot an 84 and placed second overall at the tournament and Pederson shot a 99.

The team has some time off and won’t play again until Monday, April 20. In the meantime they’ll all continue to work vigorously on short game, noted Mickelson.

“We'll split the teams and we'll always let them hit balls every day, but we got to really work on our touch around the greens and our lag putting,” said Mickelson.

The girls will be split into two different teams, one going to Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction on Monday, April 20, and the other playing at Adobe Creek National Golf Course in Fruita on Tuesday, April 21.

Then Mickelson will take the top four to play at Salida Golf Course on Thursday, April 24, to end the week.
