The Gunnison High School girls basketball team lost their final game of the regular season and now have their focus set on the state playoffs.

The Cowboys hosted the Roaring Fork Rams on Saturday, Feb. 28, losing 70-42. The Rams are a top 10 3A team in the state.

“We definitely got a little bit shelled in the first quarter, but played extremely well,” said head coach Chad Terry. “I mean, there was a stretch in the second quarter where I think that's as well as we played all season.”

After the first eight minutes the Cowboys found themselves down 23-6, but the girls dug in and got it to within five points at one point in the second quarter and won the quarter 20-16. By the end of the third quarter the Rams had extended their lead to 26 points though, and the Cowboys couldn’t come back in the fourth.

Autumn Terry led the team in scoring against the Rams with 10 points. Ashlyn Cowan had nine, Althea Stansberry scored six points, Brooke Terry and Merci Williams each added five, Kaylee Vincent scored three points and Kat Rodriguez and Delaney Diamond each added two points apiece to round out the scoring.

Terry was especially proud of the team's balanced scoring attack and the hustle throughout the game.

The Cowboys finished the season with a 10-13 record overall and are the 27 seed in the state playoffs. They will travel to Colorado Springs to take on Colorado Springs Christian High School on Friday, Mar. 6.

Colorado Springs Christian enters the game with a 19-4 record and are hosting a regional as the six seed.

In order to go into their gym and get a win Terry believes the team needs to handle pressure well, match the Coursers scoring and play with confidence.

Terry emphasized that if the girls are able to bottle up the way they played in the second quarter on Saturday and play like that for all four quarters against Colorado Springs Christian then they will give themselves a chance.

“It's one of those where we truly have nothing to lose,” said Terry. “So excited to be able to go and kind of play on a bigger stage on Friday.”
