GHS falls twice to Basalt in doubleheader

The Gunnison High School baseball team fell to 2-8 after dropping both games of their double-header with Basalt on Saturday, April 11.

The boys lost the first game 5-3, finishing with eight hits and one error.

“We had opportunities,” said head coach Tom Percival. “We just didn't take advantage of a couple of opportunities that we had.”

The Cowboys scored a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Longhorns tied it up in the bottom of the second. After two shutout innings, the Cowboys retook the lead with two runs in the fifth, but the Longhorns quickly answered with four of their own to take a 5-3 lead.

The Cowboys were shutout the next two innings and the game ended after Gunnison failed to score in the seventh.

Jorge Perez started on the mound, giving up seven hits and four runs (three earned), while walking three and striking out five in four innings of work. Nolan Frymoyer pitched the final two innings, giving up just two hits and one run (zero earned) while striking out three and walking one.

“[Perez] didn't have his best stuff, but he competed and kept us in the ball game,” said Percival. “And then Nolan Frymore came in for the last two and threw very well.”

Perez also went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs. Ethan Pierce went 2-for-3, Cody Casebolt went 1-for-4, Asher Woytek went 1-for-3 and had the Cowboys only other RBI, Ryder Vincent went 1-for-3 with a run and Frymoyer went 1-for-3.

“We just couldn't get the hits that we needed,” said Percival. “We ended up with eight hits and a couple too many strikeouts in the end that kind of hurt us.”

The Cowboys lost the second game 10-6. They fell behind early and were unable to climb out of the hole they dug themselves in.

“Had some things that didn't go our way early in the game that got us in that hole,” said Percival. “And we did fight back, but every time we fought back, they would answer, they would respond. [We] just could never get out of that hole.”

The Longhorns went up 4-0 after the first and the Cowboys got three back in the third to cut the lead, but the Longhorns answered with five of their own in the home-half of the third.

The Cowboys added a run in the fifth that was answered and two more in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough.

Pierce started on the mound for the Cowboys, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs, while walking two and striking out four in two and 1/3 innings.

Frymoyer came in and pitched three and 2/3 innings in-relief, giving up seven hits and three runs (one earned), while striking out four and walking one.

Three Cowboys finished with multiple hits in the game. Cesar Marmolejo went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs, Pierce went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI and Perez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Casebolt had a hit and a run, Jack Stone had a hit and an RBI, Frymoyer had a hit and a run and Woytek had an RBI.

This week the Cowboys have three games starting with a home game against Cedaredge (9-3)  on Wednesday, April 15. Then they’ll travel to Delta (8-6) on Saturday, April 18, for a double-header.

“We're trying to just get these guys to hate to lose, to compete, to prepare and do things, to give ourselves a chance,” said Percival as they head into this week.

Percival emphasized that the team is close and though the record isn’t what they want it to be, things should change if the boys take the next step.
