Cowboys travel to Grand Junction, earn several personal bests

The Gunnison High School track and field team traveled to Grand Junction on Saturday, March 28, for the Mickey Dunn Invitational, their first action since spring break.

“The kids ran, threw and jumped really well on Saturday,” wrote head coach Stacey Mickelson in an email to the Times. “Lots of PR's all over the track. I was really proud with how well they all did.”

The meet had the Cowboys pitted against a myriad of 4A and 5A schools, but that didn’t seem to matter as the team produced 10 personal records at the meet.

Rylan Sahagun kicked off the action with a 47th place finish in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 13.13 seconds. Bud McWilliams finished 56th with a time of 14.42 seconds and Esteban Alvarez finished 59th with a time of 16.21 seconds.

Cooper Boardman finished 30th in the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 25.22 seconds and Roman Loken finished 45th with a time of 26.53 seconds.

Sam Sawyer’s 11th place finish in the boys 400-meter dash was a personal best, with a time of 54.04 seconds. Loken finished 28th with a time of 58.69 seconds and Angel Ballester finished 34th with a time of 1:01.03.

Ian Baker finished third in the boys 800-meter run with a personal best time of 1:59.37. Ballester finished 31st with a time of 2:28.70 and Adrian Hanacek finished 42nd with a time of 2:48.72.

Jack Siegrist finished 46th in the boys 1600-meter run with a time of 6:07.11 and Hanacek finished 48th with a time of 6:10.32.

Jesus Chona finished 13th in the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 11:24.89. Nicholas Monitello finished 16th with a time of 11:34.39 and Riego Koepsel finished 20th with a time of 11:47.78.

Cooper Mickelson finished 13th in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 19.45 seconds.

Cooper Mickelson also finished 12th in the boys 300-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 45.95 seconds.

The Gunnison boys 4x800-meter relay team finished ninth with a time of 9:13.38.

Boardman finished seventh in the boys high jump with a personal best jump of five feet, seven inches. Sahagun finished 17th with a jump of 5-3.

McWilliams finished 37th in the boys long jump with a distance of 14-3.5.

Cooper Mickelson finished 16th in the boys triple jump with a total distance of 35-8.75.

Marco Escobedo finished 34th in the boys discus with a throw of 87-5, Carlos Serrano finished 36th with a throw of 84-8 and Zair Altamirano finished 42nd with a throw of 67-4.

Escobedo also finished 13th in the boys shot put with a personal best throw of 38-6 and Altamirano finished 27th with a throw of 34-2.

On the girls side, Katelyn Vallejo placed 38th in the girls 100-meter dash with a time of 15.44 seconds, Geneva Estrada finished 39th with a time of 15.47 seconds and Kayden McDonough finished 48th with a time of 16.69 seconds.

Autumn Terry placed fourth in the girls 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 26.92 seconds and Emma Bogart finished 42nd with a time of 31.37 seconds.

Gianna Wickenhauser finished 14th in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.70 and Brooke Span placed 21st with a time of 1:11.29.

Avery Crean finished 31st in the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:57.07, Caris Stoerkel finished 39th with a time of 3:08.16 and Kinley Dziekan finished 44th with a time of 3:25.12.

Jordan Callahan finished 10th in the girls 1600-meter run with a personal best time of 5:38.80, Stoerkel finished 34th with a time of 6:51.64 and Dziekan finished 42nd with a time of 7:15.99.

Bristol Buffington finished 16th in the girls 3200-meter run with a time of 13:43.22.

Vivian Clark finished 17th in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 20.42 seconds and Haley Smith finished 20th with a time of 21.65 seconds.

Clark finished 15th in the girls 300-meter hurdles with a time of 58 seconds and Smith finished 24th with a time of 1:06.69.

The girls 4x100-meter relay team of Terry, Bogart, Clark and Aubrey Welfelt finished ninth with a personal best time of 54.45 seconds.

The girls also placed 12th in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 2:04.86 and eighth in the girls 4x800-meter relay with a time of 11:19.26.

Bogart finished ninth in the girls high jump with a personal best jump of 4-8. 

Terry finished third in the girls long jump with a personal best jump of 15-9.25, Welfelt placed 11th with a jump of 14-2.25 and Ellie Woodward placed 27th with a jump of 12-1.75.

Woodward placed 18th in the girls triple jump with a total distance of 26-9.75.

Tabyn McMillan placed 37th in the girls discus with a throw of 59-8, Susan Espinosa placed 38th with a throw of 53 feet and Tea Waggoner placed 39th with a throw of 52 feet.

Espinosa placed 29th in the girls shot put with a throw of 21-11, Waggoner placed 38th with a throw of 18-9 and McMillan placed 40th with a throw of 18-2.

The Cowboys next meet is the Frank Woodburn Invitational in Grand Junction on Saturday, April 4.
