The Gunnison High School boys basketball team dropped to 2-18 on the season after losing their penultimate game of the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The Cowboys lost at Olathe Tuesday night 70-59. The boys found themselves down 34-20 at the end of the first half after being outscored by 11 in the second quarter. They cut the lead to four points after outscoring the Pirates 22-12 in the third, but were unable to complete the comeback and lost by 11.

“That was just turnovers,” said head coach Christian Aguilar. “It’s something that we just haven’t had the recipe for as far as just taking care of the basketball. And when you have 20-plus turnovers in a game, it’s just really, really hard to win a basketball game.”

The Cowboys were led by Max Peluso who finished the game with 31 points. Landon Miller scored 12, Jake Ebbott added six, Asher Woytek scored five points, Ryder Vincent had three and Jorge Perez rounded out the scoring with two points.

One of the bright spots for this Cowboy squad has been senior Peluso. He has truly blossomed into a true scoring threat and a vocal leader on the team despite the tough season.

“It’s one of those things where it’s just like you’ve seen the progress over the last four years where it’s like he’s a timid, shy, he’ll do the dirty work for you,” said Aguilar. “But then all of a sudden, this year it has just changed”

The Cowboys have one more game left this season, a home game against 3A top 10 Roaring Fork (17-3) on Saturday, Feb. 28. Aguilar’s team will not be shying away from the challenge though, they are excited to play spoiler and to try and end their season with a win.

“It’s easy to look at records, easy to look at all these other moving pieces as far as, hey, last game of the season, don’t play as hard, but that hasn’t been the mentality,” said Aguilar.
