Cowboys compete at snowy Coal Ridge invite

The Gunnison High School track and field team traveled to New Castle on a cold, snowy Friday, April 17, to compete in the Coal Ridge Invitational.

“It was really cold on Friday,” wrote head coach Stacey Mickelson in an email to the Times. “The kids started out the day running in the snow. I thought they were all really resilient. We had many personal bests even in the bad weather.”

The highlight of the meet was Marco Escobedo’s 16-inch personal best in the shot put, according to Mickelson.

Kicking it off on the boys side, Cooper Boardman placed 18th in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 12.61 seconds. Bing O’Rourke placed 43rd with a time of 14.27 and Esteban Alvarez placed 49th with a time of 16.92 seconds.

Sam Sawyer placed fifth in the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 24.01 seconds, Boardman placed 11th with a time of 24.64 seconds, Roman Loken placed 20th with a time of 26.19 seconds and Rylan Sahagun placed 23rd with a time of 26.38 seconds.

Ian Baker placed third in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 53.34 seconds, Sawyer placed fifth with a time of 53.59 seconds, Loken placed 17th with a time of 58.24 seconds and Cruz Dominguez placed 19th with a time of 58.99 seconds.

Baker placed second in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.40 and Jesus Chona placed 11th with a time of 2:17.25.

Chona placed 15th in the boys 1600-meter run with a time of 5:03.51, Riego Koepsel placed 25th with a time of 5:38.96, Angel Ballester placed 28th with a time of 5:47.50 and Jack Siegrist placed 40th with a time of 6:34.75.

Cooper Mickelson placed ninth in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 20.36 seconds.

Cooper Mickelson placed 10th in the boys 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.99 seconds.

The boys 4x800-meter relay team placed ninth in with a time of 10:46.34.

Rylan Sahagun placed ninth in the boys high jump with a jump of five feet, six and a half inches. Boardman placed 12th with a jump of 5-4.5 and O’Rourke placed 14th with a jump of 5-2.5.

Bud McWilliams placed 22nd in the long jump with a jump of 14-8.

Cooper Mickelson placed 10th in the boys triple jump with a total distance of 32-9 and McWilliams placed 13th with a total distance of 29-4.25.

Marco Escobedo placed sixth in the boys shot put with a throw of 39-10.5.

On the girls side, Autumn Terry placed third in the girls 100-meter dash with a time of 13.40 seconds to kick things off. Emma Bogart placed 21st with a time of 15.26 seconds, Lauren Cowan placed 33rd with a time of 15.80 and Olivia Gomez placed 41st with a time of 16.16 seconds.

Terry placed second in the girls 200-meter dash with a time of 26.29 seconds, Maya Petrie placed ninth with a time of 29.01 seconds, Bogart placed 28th with a time of 31.78 seconds and Gomez placed 30th with a time of 32.68 seconds.

Jordan Callahan placed seventh in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.35, Gianna Wickenhauser placed ninth with a time of 1:08.00, Brooke Span placed 16th with a time of 1:13.15 and Avery Crean placed 21st with a time of 1:15.15.

Callahan placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.59, Wickenhauser placed 11th with a time of 2:40.94 and Crean placed 23rd with a time of 3:02.37.

Elora Jones placed seventh in the girls 1600-meter run with a time of 5:44.12, Bristol Buffington placed 23rd with a time of 7:05.81, Caris Stoerkel placed 24th with a time of 7:14.26 and Kinley Dziekan placed 26th with a time of 7:30.34.

Caroline Sudderth placed third in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.12 seconds and Haley Smith with a time of 20.91 seconds.

Sudderth placed sixth in the girls 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.65 seconds and Smith placed 18th with a time of 1:02.19.

The girls 4x100-meter relay team placed third with a time of 52.93 seconds.

The girls 4x200-meter relay team placed second with a time of 1:51.59.

The girls 4x800-meter relay team placed eighth with a time of 13:18.51.

Bogart placed sixth in the girls high jump with a jump of 4-6.5.

Aubrey Welfelt placed third in the girls long jump with a jump of 14-7.5 and Cowan placed 20th with a jump of 11-4.

The Cowboys will head to Alamosa for their next meet, the High Altitude Challenge, on Friday, April 24.
