Letters to the Editor

Editor: Four weeks ago the Gunnison Times posted the GOP’s letter to the editor on bringing to light the fact that Colorado’s PUC is appointed by Governor Polis.

Editor: Our family recently lost one of our sweet ladies at the age of 89. She was buried at the Powderhorn cemetery where our family all lived since the 1800s.

Editor: You published a letter last week authored by local GOP leaders criticizing Colorado’s Clean Heat Plan. This letter leans heavily on a claim that electrifying homes will inevitably saddle working families with $30,000–$70,000 in conversion costs.

Editor: I am writing to correct several factually incorrect statements included in Mark Reaman’s letter to the editor, published on Dec. 24, 2025 in the Gunnison Country Times regarding the “Clean Heat Plan.”

Editor: I am writing in response to Jim Starr’s Jan. 8 letter to the Gunnison Country Times.

Editor: As I sit here writing this, it is the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on our capitol.

Editor: High Country Conservation Advocates (HCCA) invites all ages to join us, in partnership with Western Colorado University and the Trailhead Children’s Museum, for our second screening of the 21st Annual Backcountry Film Festival.

Editor: As we begin a new year, the Gunnison County Republicans are excited to kick off the 2026 election season with energy, optimism and a commitment to educating voters.

Editor: Thank you, Jon Matuszczak and Joe Dix, for your letters in regard to the failed ballot box science experiment of Proposition 114.

Editor: I want to begin by acknowledging something we can all agree on, compassion is a strength.

Editor: Your state congressman, Larry Don Suckla, delivered a letter this month to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission urging the commissioners to reverse their latest electrification mandate.

Editor: I was encouraged to learn that Hope Scheppelman, a candidate for U.S. Congress in Colorado’s 3rd District, has signed the pledge to introduce or co-sponsor the U.S. Term Limits Constitutional Amendment. At a time when trust in Washington is at historic lows, that commitment matters.

Editor: As 2025 comes to a close, Living Journeys extends heartfelt gratitude to the Gunnison Valley community. Your generosity continues to make essential cancer support services possible for local individuals and families.

Editor: I would like to thank the Gunnison-Crested Butte Association of Realtors for helping my family and I achieve our dream of becoming first-time homeowners. Thank you so much for presenting us with a grant to help with costs of buying a home.

The Crested Butte Snowsports Foundation (CBSF) wrapped up a successful month of fundraising this November, hosting three well-attended events that brought the community together in support of youth snowsports in the Gunnison Valley.

Editor: The thing that local ski resorts could do to most enhance skier safety and comfort is to clear snow from chairs about to be loaded.

Editor: Earlier this month, when SNAP food benefits were suddenly frozen during the federal shutdown, hundreds of Gunnison Valley families faced nearly two weeks of fear and uncertainty. Even after benefits were restored on November 13, it took several more days for many residents to receive their benefits, and the ripple effects have continued. As grocery and housing costs rise, more of our neighbors are struggling.

Editor: The photos in last week’s paper clearly showed the crowd size and the fun of that community Thanksgiving dinner. Now, here’s a bit of the “story behind the pictures.”

Editor: I’m writing regarding the Gunnison Country Times article on Dec. 4 about the recent wolf kill of another heifer in eastern Gunnison County on Nov. 22.

Editor: The holiday season brings joy and fun, but it can also bring grief and loss. Many of us experienced personal loss this year, whether from the death of a loved one, a heavy medical diagnosis or being let go from a job.
