Editor: Federally, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) earmarked $50 billion for transforming rural health care, and $1 billion is earmarked for Colorado. However not all is as it seems, as is often the case with the current administration, as over $1 trillion was cut from health care, mostly related to Medicaid cuts. What is gained from this award is not close to repairing the damage caused by the OBBBA.

Editor: Four weeks ago the Gunnison Times posted the GOP’s letter to the editor on bringing to light the fact that Colorado’s PUC is appointed by Governor Polis.

Editor: Our family recently lost one of our sweet ladies at the age of 89. She was buried at the Powderhorn cemetery where our family all lived since the 1800s.

Editor: You published a letter last week authored by local GOP leaders criticizing Colorado’s Clean Heat Plan. This letter leans heavily on a claim that electrifying homes will inevitably saddle working families with $30,000–$70,000 in conversion costs.

Editor: I am writing to correct several factually incorrect statements included in Mark Reaman’s letter to the editor, published on Dec. 24, 2025 in the Gunnison Country Times regarding the “Clean Heat Plan.”

Editor: I am writing in response to Jim Starr’s Jan. 8 letter to the Gunnison Country Times.

A series of recent Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oil and gas lease sales across Colorado, and a rushed “replacement sale” of the same parcels, continue to demonstrate the fiscal and social irresponsibility of the Trump Administration’s effort to cheapen and giveaway public lands to the fossil fuel industry.

Editor: As I sit here writing this, it is the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on our capitol.

Editor: Your state congressman, Larry Don Suckla, delivered a letter this month to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission urging the commissioners to reverse their latest electrification mandate.

Editor: I was encouraged to learn that Hope Scheppelman, a candidate for U.S. Congress in Colorado’s 3rd District, has signed the pledge to introduce or co-sponsor the U.S. Term Limits Constitutional Amendment. At a time when trust in Washington is at historic lows, that commitment matters.

The Crested Butte Snowsports Foundation (CBSF) wrapped up a successful month of fundraising this November, hosting three well-attended events that brought the community together in support of youth snowsports in the Gunnison Valley.
