GV-HEAT helps homeowners make their homes more energy efficient

Did you know that GV-HEAT officially became part of Gunnison County this year? GV-HEAT, the Gunnison Valley Home Energy Advancement Team, helps homeowners and renters make their homes more energy efficient, comfortable, and safe. We are part of the Gunnison County Housing Authority and are located in the Zugelder Building (the former Gunnison library).

So what’s new for 2026? We now offer free home energy assessments valued at $500. When you enroll, an energy analyst will evaluate your home’s building envelope, mechanical systems, and key safety indicators during an on-site visit. Based on the findings, you’ll receive recommendations to improve your home’s energy efficiency and comfort.

If your household income is below 150% of the Area Median Income (AMI), or if you are a Community Priority Member (such as childcare staff, firefighters, police, first responders, ski patrol, lodging staff, local government or nonprofit employees, restaurant or retail workers, teachers, or school district staff) and your home is your primary residence, you may qualify for up to $2,000 in Energy Smart Colorado rebates. These funds can be used for insulation or air sealing improvements if air leakage is reduced by at least 10%.

Air sealing typically focuses on areas you don’t normally see, such as attics, crawlspaces, or mechanical rooms, where contractors seal penetrations, add weatherstripping, or apply caulking. Insulation can then be added to further improve performance. Improvements are verified through a blower door test, which depressurizes the home so technicians can identify where outside air is entering. For many homes, the $2,000 rebate can cover most of the cost of air sealing.

Thinking about upgrading your heating system or water heater? Electrification can be especially beneficial if your current system is aging, you rely on propane, or you want healthier indoor air. Cold-climate air-source heat pumps, paired with a backup system for extreme cold days, can be up to 300% more efficient than older equipment. Your energy analyst or a qualified installer can help you compare options.

Households within the 150% AMI range may also qualify for additional rebates, including another $2,000 from Energy Smart Colorado for electrification upgrades. The new Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate (HEAR) Program through the Colorado Energy Office can provide up to $14,000 in rebates for heat pump water heaters, cold-climate heat pumps, electric stoves and cooktops, panel upgrades, insulation, air sealing, ventilation, and wiring. Even households outside these income ranges may qualify for local utility rebates and financing options.

If this feels like a lot to navigate, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Contact me at the GV-HEAT office at gmichel@gunnisoncounty.org or 970-234-5613, or visit www.gunnisoncounty.org/ESC. Every home is unique, and a simple energy assessment is the best place to start. From there, we can help identify your priorities and plan the next steps.

I look forward to hearing from you.
