James ‘Jim’ Paul Ulm Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on August 9, 2026. Jim was born on August 19, 1937, in Frankfort, Indian, as the oldest brother of five children. His left-handed basketball skills contributed to tournament success at the Pueblo Junior College in 1956-57 and the Air Force Academy from 1957-61, but his biggest Colorado “win” was meeting his wife of 58 years, Jeanne Newkirk.
Throughout many military moves, Jim and Jeanne stayed true to the Colorado roots of their love story through summers in Gunnison, where Jim redirected his competitive spirit to golf and fishing. They passed their love of the mountains on to their children, grandchildren, and eventually great-grandchildren. In 2002 they settled in Boerne, Texas, where Jim was a member of the church choir and the Knights of Columbus at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.
For all he accomplished during more than 30 years of military service, Jim was proudest of his family. To them, “the General” was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He stayed closely connected to the people he loved, prayed for them daily, and proudly shared stories about his family with everyone he met.
Jim is survived by his three children: James ‘Jim’ Ulm II of Houston, Texas, Joanna Ulm Peters of Monument and John Ulm of San Antonio, Texas. A full obituary, including a list of family members, is available at https://www.ebensberger-fisher.com/obituaries/James-Paul-Ulm?obId=49246110&source=EmSh.
