Scott Dubberly Sherwood was born Nov. 18, 1946, to Bettye Ann Keammerling and Ralph Dubberly. Ralph sadly perished in a tragic plane crash. Bettye then married Irvin William Sherwood and he subsequently adopted Scott.
Scott's early childhood was spent hunting and fishing all over the Colorado mountains. On Feb. 4, 1969, Scott was drafted into the United States Army and was sent to serve his country in the Vietnam War. During his service he received five service commendation medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was truly a hero of the war.
After his honorable service in the war, he settled in Crested Butte. He later met and married Donna Kerr and had one child, Hillary. In the early years he supported his family hunting and trapping. For many years he ran the cat crew on Mount Crested Butte. He then received his degree in biology from Western State and settled into working for the BLM as a range biologist. He did research on the Gunnison Sage-Grouse as well as numerous other things throughout the valley.
Scott was one of the very first people to run sled dogs in the Gunnison Basin. As the years went by he slowly grew a kennel of sled dogs and spent his winters helping run dogsled tours with friend Becky Barkman. He was an avid hunter and lived mostly off the land, while trapping and foraging. While in the backwoods of Crested Butte he would often run into John Gallowich, and thus formed a lifelong friendship of hunting and trapping together. He also spent many years hunting with friend Clarence McDaniel. In later years he developed a fondness for mules and spent a great deal of time riding and packing his mules all over the surrounding Gunnison country wilderness. His favorite mule was Billy Rueben, who was wildly famous wherever he went in the Gunnison Valley.
Scott is survived by his daughter Hillary Sherwood, grandson Julian Spotted Elk, nephew Nick (Lauren) Sherwood, Claire and Allison Sherwood, niece Jill (Jeff Buske), and Emma, Ashley and Heather Herrick. His dear friends, Kevin and Gail Davidson, and David McKenney and Barbie Adams.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother William Sherwood.
A memorial service will be held for Scott next summer in Crested Butte for family and friends.
