Letters to the Editor

Editor: Colorado’s leaders are sounding the alarm about this year’s wildfire risk, but it’s important to remember that our state has a wide and wonderful variety of forests that need …

Editor: In Mark Hillman’s April 16, 2026 guest commentary in the Gunnison Times, he describes, in a rather partisan way, a summary of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Chiles v. Salazar.

Editor: The Board of Directors of Legacy Family Ministries announces the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Wendy Solheim, effective May 31, 2026.

Editor: Last night, I saw a news story about the president’s sons, who are making millions of dollars by investing in the war machine.

Editor: The Gunnison Valley is this very week losing Terry Vader's Gunnison Valley Vitamin and Health, a staple for health-conscious citizens since June 1, 1998, and boy will we miss her.

Editor: Let’s stop pretending we’re not heading toward a preventable problem.

Editor: While it's true first ladies are unelected, comparing their initiatives overlooks important context.  Eleanor Roosevelt, Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford, and Laura Bush chose public advocacy, and that's commendable.  Melania Trump launched Be Best, focusing on children's well-being, online safety, and opioid awareness.

Editor: The proposed Gunnison Outdoor Resources Protection (GORP) Act deserves careful scrutiny, particularly regarding its economic and land management implications.

Editor: Over the past two weeks there have been two letters that I would like to comment on. One was a long letter embellishing the SAVE Act. How it will improve voter accountability, etc. What the writer fails to point out is that the act is not only an act looking for a problem, but a not so subtle attempt to disenfranchise millions of voters.

Editor: We can all probably think of an individual or group of people who irritates, frustrates or even infuriates us. We may spend time and energy contemplating and fuming about their misguided behavior or ideology and want to do something to change them.

Editor: The Resiliency Project is so happy to announce its next three micro awards.

Editor: From lush green pastures that adorn the valley floors to the high mountain peaks, we’re lucky to call western Colorado home. This year’s pitiful snowpack and early runoff is likely to create a widespread destructive drought that will crush hay and wildflower yields alike. We’ll be incredibly lucky if our communities avoid devastating wildfires.

Editor: Seeing our democratic republic backslide toward autocracy has driven me to protest. My list of driving forces includes: legal actions against political opponents; threats to nationalize voting processes; threats against universities, media networks, law firms to bring them under Trump’s control; appointed officials who fail to act as independent entities; suppression of dissent; deployment and threats of deployment of armed forces against Americans who exercise their Constitutional rights.

Editor: The Republican Party of Gunnison County is proud to announce that on the USA’s 250th anniversary, July 4, 2026, you can enroll your child into a Trump Account. Children who are born …

Editor: There has been a great deal of confusion, and frankly, misinformation, circulating about the SAVE America Act. As someone who believes both in election integrity and honest public discussion, I think it’s important to step back and look at what this bill actually does.

Editor: This is an addendum to my previous letter on April 9th. "Elizabeth Warren best reflects the values and priorities of the Indivisible movement."

Editor: Presidential First Ladies are not elected, nor are they assigned specific duties.

Editor: Many thanks to all the community members who showed up for the No Kings 3 protest in Gunnison, as well as the many volunteers who organized the march and rally. Your presence, energy and care for this community and country were deeply felt.

Editor: At 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 14, at the Gunnison County Library, the League of Women Voters will host an open meeting for all those who are interested, to hear and to visit with two relevant and informative speakers.

Editor: Many people in Colorado’s 3rd District are trying to understand what just happened and, more importantly, why.
