Editor:
As a newcomer to town, I understand suicide has been far too common here, and the community stepped in with the “We Care Gunny” campaign to address it.
Might I suggest it’s time to take the signs down?
The large banners I drive by multiple times per day scream, “Feeling broken, sad, or even hopeless?,” and “Does life feel way too hard?”
Though the intentions were good, this is like writing depressing notes on your mirror to look at everyday. At some point, everyone encounters opportunities for sadness, and if the messaging on their mirror constantly asks, “Are you broken and sad," that person will eventually find reason to agree with it. It accomplishes the opposite of its intention.
As a suggestion for something more positive in their place, hang “Gunni Love” signs with a link to a website that not only lists resources available, but also includes community groups and events that people can join or attend. Create a generic, positive website that the entire community can use to find connection, support, and entertainment that’s not exclusive to people struggling.
Much of this information already exists in different places. If someone thinks this is a worthwhile idea and wants to fund it, we can combine them into one site and make the signs for maybe a few thousand dollars.
If nothing else, take the signs down.
