Editor:
In a year with historically low snowpack, historically warm February and March where melt out and high water occurred six weeks earlier than normal and several mountain passes in the state have opened early, Guanella Pass opened at the earliest date in history.
Gunnison County would have needed to open Kebler Pass last week for it to be one week early.
The county says that they have/had several culverts to replace but they have had two months to do the work and have attempted to complete it using inadequate equipment. The county also says that it has snowed in April. It has snowed some, but with bare ground it melts rapidly.
It seems that we need reasons to get the pass open as opposed to excuses why we can't.
This all comes at a time when road and bridge is asking for a tax increase for more money. It seems difficult to vote yes for it after this.
