Access to healthcare for immigrant families in the Gunnison Valley underwent a profound transformation, growing from 392 patients served in 2023 to approximately 1,100 in 2025. Beyond being a remarkable statistic, this growth reflects the opening of doors toward equity in rural healthcare. Behind this achievement is Cinthia Sáenz, whose leadership at the helm of the local hospital’s bilingual navigation program earned her the prestigious Dr. Virgilio Licona Community Health Leadership Award, presented by the Colorado Health Foundation.
"It took more than 22 years for us to be heard," Sáenz commented, reflecting on the journey she walked before becoming a pillar of support for hundreds of Spanish-speaking families and members of the Indigenous Cora community.
"I spoke English, and yet there was still a distance between healthcare providers and patients," she expressed. Since arriving in Gunnison from Mexico, Cinthia experienced firsthand what it means to navigate an unfamiliar healthcare system. The language and cultural barriers she faced—which intensified during the birth of her son—led her to question the system’s effectiveness and transform into a dedicated patient advocate.
Those personal experiences and the fear that her community would be misunderstood became the driving force behind her empathy. The 150% increase in healthcare access for immigrant families did not happen by chance; it occurred because the community found in Cinthia someone they could truly trust.
Cinthia’s nomination for the award was born out of a secret, coordinated effort behind her back between Jennifer Birnie, Vice President of Community Health and Preventive Services at Gunnison Valley Health (GVH), and Marketa Zubkova, representative of the community organization Juntos por Gunnison.
According to Birnie, Cinthia’s arrival in 2023 as the first Bilingual Patient Navigator marked a transformative milestone for the hospital: "She has helped us understand that providing equitable healthcare requires more than translating information into another language; it requires cultural understanding and a genuine commitment to listening. Patients who may have previously felt intimidated now have someone they trust. Cinthia has made Gunnison Valley Health a better organization, and she has made me a better leader."
Overcoming these barriers turns healthcare into a pillar of dignity. For this reason, the award transcends an individual celebration and serves as a catalyst for change for all immigrant residents in the region.
As Marketa Zubkova emphasizes: "Cinthia’s work reflects Dr. Licona’s legacy through three key words: community, health, and leadership. I hope this recognition opens new
doors of opportunity for our immigrant community and inspires them to believe in their own potential."
The Dr. Virgilio Licona Award honors those who break down walls to bring dignity to the community. By recognizing Cinthia Sáenz, the Colorado Health Foundation not only honors an individual journey, but also celebrates the alliance of a rural community learning to work together under the values of equity and empathy.
