After a long closure, Agave Family Mexican Restaurant has officially reopened at its new location on 618 W. Tomichi Ave. The popular local eatery is eager to welcome back longtime patrons and new guests alike, offering authentic Mexican cuisine.
Brothers Porfirio Godines and Carlos Godina have built a deep legacy in Gunnison’s culinary scene over many years. Their local journey began in 2009 in the kitchen of El Paraíso, where they honed their skills and experimented with custom recipes. By 2014, driven by a desire to share their own culinary vision, they opened the original Agave Family Mexican Restaurant in the Mountain Meadows Shopping Mall on North Main Street. They successfully operated at that location for a decade, establishing a strong local following. Recently, an opportunity arose to merge businesses with Tacos La Esquina, prompting their move to West Tomichi.
“When Agave moved here, we stopped offering Tacos La Esquina as a separate business because Agave has more dishes,” said Godines. “The two are merged together as Agave, but we still have a little of Taco La Esquina, such as the tacos. We’re getting the kitchen ready so we can offer the original Agave menu, including burritos and other dishes.”
Navigating business disruptions during the 2020 pandemic and moving across town created significant challenges for the team. The owners described the recovery process as demanding, given the financial burdens of extended closures, mandatory renovations, and rebuilding community awareness around their new address. Despite these hurdles, substantial progress has been made. Plans include removing the small adjacent Mexican grocery store to expand interior dining space. Looking further ahead, Godines hopes that by the summer of 2027, Agave will finish renovations to the outdoor patio complete with its own dedicated bar.
Agave reopened roughly three months ago, and the owners are anxiously awaiting customers to see their updates and try new menu items.
Bringing traditional family recipes from Jalisco, Mexico, to the Gunnison Valley has been a lifelong dream for Godines. While fresh seafood dishes hold a special place in his heart, he approaches every item on the menu with great care. The extensive menu features flavorful smothered burritos, traditional soups, fresh salads, menudo, and mojarra rellena. Guests can pair their meals with handcrafted margaritas or classic Mexican cantaritos. In addition, the restaurant hosts multiple weekly specials and continues to serve popular street taco options from Tacos La Esquina.
“I like to cook because it’s my job and my source of income, but cooking is also my passion,” said Godines. “I’ve always loved it, and I enjoy cooking for people and making them happy.”
Agave prides itself on serving heart-filled recipes in a warm, family-friendly environment. Beyond great food, the restaurant is committed to supporting the local community. To show appreciation for area students, Agave offers a 15% discount to Western Colorado University students who present a valid student ID.
Godines wants customers to enjoy good food, friendly staff, and a bright, welcoming atmosphere. After months of hard work repairing and restoring, he’s ready to invite customers back under three circumstances: come in, share a meal, and have a great time.
