A new exhibit has opened up in Western Colorado University’s Office of the Provost in Taylor Hall.
Pavel Cenkl, Western’s new Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, has more than 20 years of experience in international higher education leadership with a focus on interdisciplinary, place-based, and ecologically grounded learning. During his time at Western, he hopes to integrate more interdisciplinary practices across campus, starting with the opening of an art gallery in his office.
“Students rarely make it up to the third floor of Taylor because it’s mostly administrative offices,” said Cenkl. “We’re looking for ways to get students to parts of campus they don’t usually frequent.”
The gallery contains work from Western art students across different disciplines and mediums including oil, photography, jewelry, and more. Students submitted their artwork with the help of Chair of Art and local artist Tina Butterfield. They joined together to host a gallery opening on Oct. 22. Delicious small bites were provided by Sodexo catering and students could answer questions and show off their work. The once bland office has turned into a quaint art show.
For many students, this is the first time their art has been displayed in a gallery. Even though each art student at Western is required to showcase their work in a gallery, it doesn’t happen for many of them until their senior year.
The gallery is open to the public during office hours and the artwork can be purchased through the help of the Provost’s office.
