During the first three weeks of October, Gunnison County Health & Human Services (HHS) along with partnering agencies hosted three flu vaccine clinics in Crested Butte, Gunnison, and at Western Colorado University. Between all three clinics, 439 people were vaccinated against the flu virus! Hosting all three clinics utilized around 50 staff members
This year, the flu clinics also had the honor of partnering with Western Colorado University's first nursing student cohort. This was a great experience for the students, and their program was able to utilize HHS public health nurses as preceptors, meaning they could supervise the students in a real-world setting.
If you were not able to get your flu vaccine during other offered clinics, there are other options for receiving your flu vaccination:
The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment reports that flu activity is rising early in Colorado in a recent press release. The press release states that "the best way to protect you and your loved ones from severe illness is to stay up to date on your seasonal vaccines". We would like to remind people that it can take up to 2 weeks for a flu vaccine to reach full effects, so planning to get the vaccine ahead of any travel or gatherings is highly recommended.
The Gunnison County HHS team would like to thank the community for showing up to build their immunity to protect the community! We would also like to thank the students/staff in partnering agencies with Western Colorado University student nurse cohort, Gunnison Police Department, Gunnison Valley Hospital and Gunnison Valley Health Paramedics, and community volunteer Arden Anderson for all the dedicated work. These clinics are not only a great way to offer easy access to flu vaccines, they also help the HHS team practice for mass dispensing clinics.
