Editor: As you may have noticed, last Friday President Trump re-endorsed Representative Jeff Hurd as a MAGA supporter after recently withdrawing his support of him. Why, might you ask? We …

Editor: As I watch gas prices rise on an almost daily basis since the start of the Iran War, I think about the 13 service members that have died (as of March 22, 2026) and realize that there is …

A case of appalling animal cruelty in Wyoming is close to being closed with a plea of guilty, setting a historic and significant example for the state and perhaps other jurisdictions.

Editor: I see Jon Matuszczak had another letter in last week’s paper in which he again attempts to justify the outrageous excesses of the Trump administration by using innuendo, ridiculous …

Editor: A slogan is a short, catchy phrase that is easy to remember. For example, 'Make America great again' or MAGA is simple. It didn't sit well with me because I've always thought America was great, but it is embraced by many. Evidently 'Be the fix in '26' is confusing to some, but it simply says go out and vote in the midterms for people who can fix the many messes that the Trump administration has littered around the world and here at home.

Editor: Did you know that GV-HEAT officially became part of Gunnison County this year? GV-HEAT, the Gunnison Valley Home Energy Advancement Team, helps homeowners and renters make their homes more energy efficient, comfortable, and safe. We are part of the Gunnison County Housing Authority and are located in the Zugelder Building (the former Gunnison library).

We are two and a half decades into the Southwest’s most severe drought of the last 1,200 years, and this winter’s snow dearth is one of the most extreme on record.

Do you remember the first time you felt fear?  The first time I experienced fear, I’m talking real fear, the kind that makes the heart race and constricts the throat and freezes the bones, I was waking from a dream.

Is this the warmest (and driest) winter ever? I’ve been asked this question more than once lately, and my first thought was “I doubt it, but I’ll have to check.” I was correct, but I was surprised that it was just a few years ago, in the winter of 1980-81, that it was both warmer and drier.

Editor: Reading from the back page of the March 5 issue of the Gunnison Shopper is a half-page Democrat ad with the slogan: "Be the fix in 26!"

When people think about substance abuse, they often picture large cities. But here in Gunnison County — a place known for mountain views, ski slopes, and a tight-knit community — the struggle is closer than many realize.

Editor: KBUT's winter 2026 pledge drive ended on Friday the 27th and, once again, the staff, board, and volunteers are simply blown away by this community's support of what we do.

Editor: We’re a pretty well-informed populace here in our idyllic little valley. We have, now, two great newspapers that reflect regional, state and some national news. The Epstein files figure prominently in the national news.

Editor: The Gunnison County Health Coalition, in Partnership with the Gunnison Country Food Pantry, recently sought funding through a Giving Connection fundraising campaign with Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley to reprint and distribute a set of multilingual “Welcome” yard signs that promote inclusion and a sense of belonging in Gunnison County.

Editor: This is how freshman Congressman Jeff Hurd’s campaign is trying to explain away his vote to continue Obamacare subsidies for three more years: “This is a chess move ... playing the long game…,” said Nova Tucker.

Editor: Abe Lincoln and Harry Truman wouldn’t stand a chance. Coming from humble backgrounds, and lacking the billions in funding provided today by billionaires and huge corporations, they would stand little chance of being elected.

Editor: After nearly 25 years serving Gunnison County, I recently stepped down from my role in community and economic development. As I close this chapter, I’ve been reflecting on what has made this work—and this place—so meaningful.

Editor: It’s always interesting to me how so many people come out against ballot measures, either directly or indirectly, no matter how well written and informative, when hardly anyone attends city council meetings. Most times, one could count the number of folks, including me, on one hand.

Among the most absurd bills currently under consideration by the Colorado legislature is the House Bill 1012, deceptively titled “concerning consumer protections to promote fair market prices practices.”

Editor: Last week across the country students walked out of class to protest ICE. They were told it was "courage" and "leadership."
