The Gunnison High School girls basketball team fell to 6-12 on the year after losing both their matchups last week.
The Cowboys started the week at Meeker, losing 51-42 on Friday, Feb. 6. The girls looked shell-shocked to start the game, said head coach Chad Terry. At one point the Cowboys found themselves down 20-0 in the first quarter.
But coming out of the locker room at halftime, the Gunnison girls showed their resilience. They played one of their best halves of the season, said Terry. They outscored Meeker 28-17 in the second half and really matched the physicality and aggressiveness of Meeker to climb back into the game, said Terry.
Kaylee Vincent led the Cowboys with 14 points against Meeker. Autumn Terry had 11, Ashlyn Cowan scored 10, Brooke Terry added four and Delaney Diamond rounded out the scoring with three points.
“I was like, you have to be stronger, girls,” said Terry about the game. “And I thought the girls responded really well. So, yeah, I know we lost, but, again, that second half, we're pretty proud of that.”
The girls then traveled to Carbondale to take on the Roaring Fork Rams, losing 50-26 in the contest on Saturday, Feb. 7.
Despite losing by 24 points, the Cowboys held the Rams to their third lowest scoring total of the year and their lowest total in a win. A loss is still a loss and Terry said he thought his team didn’t handle the Ram’s ball pressure well enough and never got into a rhythm on offense.
Cowan led the team with 16 points, Brooke Terry had seven, Autumn Terry had two and Vincent scored one point to round out the scoring.
“We just had to do more offensively, and definitely the ball pressure got to us,” said Terry. “They got three girls that are six foot pretty much and above, and it's just hard for my kids to compete with that. But, again, I was not unhappy.”
Despite losing both of their games last week, Terry sung the praises of Vincent and Cowan. Vincent, Friday’s leading scorer, “played great for us this weekend and Cowan held her own all weekend even though she was battling a lot of girls that were taller and bigger than her”said Terry.
The girls will then be back at home on Saturday, Feb. 14, to host the Telluride Miners (1-15).
“I think this week and next week should all be pretty competitive games for us, which will be good,” said Terry. “We need to kind of get that record up a little bit more if we want to make it to regional.”
