The Gunnison High School Volleyball team fell in its only action last week to Delta and now sits at 5-7 on the season.
The Cowboys hosted the Panthers on Thursday, Sept. 24, and lost 3-1. The Panthers won the first two sets, the first 25-14 and the second 25-13; the Cowboys won the third set 26-24, but lost the fourth set 25-13.
Despite the loss, head coach Shana Benson was impressed with the girls’ ability to come back and make the match interesting.
Maya Petrie led the team with 13 kills in the match and Roxie Uhrig finished behind her with six. Addison Claus and Uhrig tied for the team-lead in aces with four.
As a team, the girls had a 92.2 percent serve completion percentage.
Claus also led the team with 13 assists and Natalia Sabino had 10. Uhrig also led the team with 16 digs. Gianna Wickenhauser, Kat Rodriguez and Petrie all had two blocks.
This week, the Cowboys have two games coming up. The first is at Coal Ridge (6-6) on Thursday, Oct. 1, and the second is at home against Basalt (1-7) on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The Cowboys previously lost to Coal Ridge 3-0 earlier this year in New Castle.
“Our goal is to start strong and not get behind,” wrote Benson in an email to the Times. “Coal Ridge has a big block, so we will be working on hitting around it. We also have a new lineup so we're working hard adjusting to that.”
Deeper into the month of October, the Cowboys will be hosting their Gunnison Tough’s Pink Night. The special night, where $10 is donated for every kill and $50 for every ace, is taking place on Thursday, Oct. 1, against Moffat County.
The money is being donated by the Mountain Property Collective to the Gunnison Tough foundation.
