Christopher Michael Rouse, who spent his childhood in Crested Butte, passed away on May 12, 2025, of natural causes at his home in Denver. Chris was born Nov. 6, 1965 in Evergreen, Colorado. In 1969 Chris moved to Crested Butte with his parents, Ron and Sharon Rouse. Chris spent his childhood in Crested Butte and attended the Crested Butte Community School and Gunnison High School.
Chris had two standout passions since a young age: aviation and music. He went on to make both professional careers. Like his father Ron (who had Crested Butte Air Service at the Crested Butte Airport), Chris was drawn to aviation.
After high school he enrolled at the Colorado Northwestern Community College Aviation Technology Flight program in Rangely, Colorado, graduating in 1988. He accrued his initial hours flying for Red Tail aviation out of Moab, then later returned to Colorado to fly first for Mesa Airlines and later for America West Airlines where he was based out of Denver.
After many years in the cockpit as a first officer, he transitioned to training new pilots as a flight instructor. At the time of his passing, he worked for Southwest Airlines Ground Operations out of Denver.
Starting in elementary school, Chris began learning to play the accordion. His initial lessons were with Botsie Spritzer in Crested Butte. Chris was affectionately known as Crested Butte’s “youngest old timer” and spent most of his afternoons at Tony’s Conoco playing music, listening to stories and sitting by the pot belly stove with Tony Mihelich, Botsie Spritzer, Tommy Sneller and many other older timers of Crested Butte. His friends tell of him getting out of class early to get to Tony’s to be with the old timers and he used “music lessons” as the reason to leave class early.
He continued to play polka music throughout his teenage and adult years including performing at festivals throughout the Midwest and Oktoberfest in Grand Junction, Boulder and Denver, as well many memorable shows at Pleasure Park at the confluence of the Gunnison and North Fork Rivers. For years he shared the stage with Pete Dunda, a good friend and mentor. He was friends with and played with the legendary Frank Yankovic Band.
Chris was extremely well known in the national polka community. Much of Chris’ stage presence and storytelling skills could be attributed to his youth in Crested Butte and the nurturing tightknit community of old miners, their past and the musical traditions that they passed on to him. He was honored to sit in for Pete Dunda a few years back and play Flauschink and see that Crested Butte still loved to polka!
Chris had a sequence of losses prior to his passing, including that of his longtime partner in 2020, followed by his biological mother Diana Pecht Harper in 2023, and then his beloved dog Shelby. Chris also left behind a close-knit and very loving work family at Southwest Airlines. He was a very kind person, the best friend to so many and an extremely thoughtful and caring brother and son.
Chris is survived by his father Ron Rouse and his partner Sally Zimmerman of Hotchkiss, stepmother Sharon Rouse of Boulder, stepfather David Harper of Parker, sister Roanne Rouse Houck and brother-in-law Jonathan of Gunnison and brother Damon Rouse and sister-in-law Molly of Burnsville North Carolina. Additionally, his nieces and nephews Iris and Porter Houck and Oscar, Alma and Lia Rouse will deeply miss their Uncle Chris.
Chris’ life took him to many places, but his heart was always in the place he never stopped calling home: Crested Butte. Please join our family in a celebration of Chris’ life and a polka dance with the Pete Dunda Band at Tony’s Conoco, now the Crested Butte Heritage Museum, at 4 p.m. on Friday Sept. 26.
