The tradition of western heritage and community pride continued in Gunnison as the Cattlemen’s Days Royalty was officially crowned September 2025, in time for the 126th year of Cattlemen’s Days, one of the community’s most cherished annual celebrations.

On Sept. 16, 1940, the United States instituted the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for the draft. This was the first peacetime draft in U.S. history. Those who were selected from the draft lottery were required to serve at least one year in the armed forces. Once the U.S. entered World War II, draft terms extended through the duration of the fighting.

The National Audubon Society is once again sponsoring its annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This will be the 126th year this event will be held, making it the longest running wildlife monitoring effort in history. The CBC enlists bird enthusiasts all over the world to record a snapshot of wintering bird populations during a three-week period around Christmas once they have settled in for the winter.
