Western Colorado University invites the Gunnison Valley community to celebrate 125 years of Western at a free block party on Friday, Aug. 28, featuring local artists, food, live music, and the Grammy Award-winning band Ozomatli.

The celebration begins at 2 p.m. on South Main Street in Gunnison with the Sunni Gunni Art Market, featuring work by local artists and makers. Western student musicians will perform at 5 p.m., followed by Ozomatli at 7:30 p.m.

Ozomatli is a Grammy-winning Los Angeles-based band. The word Ozomatli is from the Nahuatl language and refers to the Aztec god of dance, music, fire, and the new harvest. The Los Angeles Times said of the group, “Ozomatli can shake up the audience in any language.”

Local food vendors and a beer garden will round out the festivities.

The event is presented in partnership with OffCenter Design, the Gunnison Arts Center, I Bar Ranch, and the Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce. Admission is free, and the entire Gunnison Valley community is invited.
