Update from Gunnison Police Department

Posted

UPDATE 9/30/2026:

Effective Wednesday morning, the Gunnison Police Department (GPD) and the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) have suspended their use of the license plate reading system through Flock Group, Inc. (dba Flock Safety). While Flock cameras may continue to generate alerts, law enforcement personnel will not respond to Flock alerts.

In 2024, City Council authorized an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the City and Gunnison County for the use of the license plate reading system. Following discussions between Gunnison Police Chief Sam Costello and Sheriff Adam Murdie more than a month ago, GCSO provided Flock Group, Inc. with 30 days’ notice of cancellation, as they manage the contract for both agencies. Per the IGA, GCSO and GPD equally shared the cost of the license plate readers, and both used the system. The cameras are expected to be deactivated and removed in the near future by Flock Group, Inc. due to the contract termination. At the direction of the Sheriff, GCSO has deactivated all user access to the local Flock system to ensure personnel can no longer access the system associated with Gunnison County.

Members of the community with questions related to the traffic stop are encouraged to contact the Gunnison Police Department. The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office is available to address questions related to the Flock system contract.

The Gunnison Police Department and Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office remain committed to policing our community by responding appropriately to calls for service and requests for assistance based on available, verified information.

Additional communications will be released as we continue to gather facts through the formal review process.
