Justus Williams throws the ball after rolling to catch it.The GHS Cowboys varsity baseball team ended the week with two wins and a loss. On Tuesday, it beat Salida and then, on Saturday, they split a doubleheader with Roaring Fork — moving the team to an 8-14 record for the season.
In the first of last week's games, the Gunnison Cowboys dominated their host in Salida, 19-2. The offense managed an unhindered run through their batting roster each inning, and their defense allowed only two points in the entire game.
First to bat on Gunnison’s roster was Justus Williams, who scored three of the team's total points. He was followed by Hunter Vincent and Skylor Wild who racked up three points, each. The Cowboys scored five times in the first inning, and seven in the second. The remaining points came in the third where they, once again, managed to run through the entire batting roster before ending the inning.
Notable plays came from Vincent and Grady Buckhanan who each knocked a triple. The only part of the game where the Spartans were able to score was towards the end, putting two on the board. This resulted in a victory for the Cowboys, allowing them to move on and prepare for their home game on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Cowboys took on a doubleheader against the Roaring Fork Rams. The first ended with the Rams on top, 22-6, but the Cowboys came roaring back and won the second, 17-5.
In the second of the two games, Buckhanan opened up the scoreboard, scoring one. The Rams hit back to tie it up with a point of their own. It was in the third and fourth when the Cowboys caught fire. In the fourth inning alone, they scored 14 points, solidifying a lead that carried through the end of the game. Wild found the most success on offense, hammering two home runs in the fourth inning.
Next up, the Cowboys will face off against the Alamosa Mean Moose on Tuesday, May 17 in Alamosa.
