Sustainable Crested Butte has announced it will close its operations effective Dec. 31. In a press release issued this week, the organization’s leadership expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the community, citing years of unwavering support and collective dedication that turned Crested Butte into a beacon for sustainability and waste reduction.

Since 2021, Sustainable Crested Butte has partnered with Gunnison County residents to host quarterly electronic recycling events.Through these collaborative efforts, approximately 120,000 pounds of electronics have been diverted from landfills, benefiting nearly 1,500 community members, the release states. This significant accomplishment is a direct result of robust community engagement and enthusiasm.

Beyond recycling, Sustainable Crested Butte’s legacy is shaped by a series of pioneering initiatives. In 2015, Benjamin Swift launched the ‘Plastic Bag Free CB’ campaign, which led to the successful plastic bag ban in Crested Butte and inspired neighboring communities to pursue similar policies. The Waste-Free Events program, another milestone, partnered with local organizers to minimize waste at community gatherings, setting new standards for responsible event management. In addition, the organization installed water bottle filling stations throughout town, making it easier for residents and visitors to choose reusable alternatives and reduce plastic waste.

“Your involvement has not only propelled our mission but inspired a movement for environmental stewardship across our town,” the organization shared in its announcement. “We are sincerely grateful for your commitment to making Crested Butte a model for sustainability.”

To ensure the continuation of responsible recycling services, Sustainable Crested Butte will donate roughly $40,000 in cash and assets to Gunnison County. This donation will help guarantee that the quarterly electronic recycling program continues indefinitely, providing all residents with ongoing access to responsible recycling options and helping to protect the valley’s natural resources for future generations.
