Public meeting is Monday for proposed Gunnison firehouse

Posted

The Gunnison Fire Prevention District will host a public meeting to discuss the replacement of the existing firehouse on West New York Avenue in Gunnison.

If you have questions about the proposed new Gunnison County fire station — the cost, the design, what it means for your property taxes, why the current building needs to be replaced — come to the meeting on Monday at Three Rivers Resort in Almont.

According to the district, maintaining the building is no longer cost-effective, energy costs are high, and space is limited. Nearly $17 million in equipment assets are unprotected because the building doesn’t meet basic building or fire codes. Replacing the structure will address these issues for the next 50-100 years. The Gunnison firehouse provides a central location for apparatus responding to all hazards.

Funding the fire station and operating expenses will require additional funds.

Estimated Total Facility Costs = $ 35,000,000 + financing interest/fees; Annually $2,928,777 over 20 years. Chief Hugo Ferchau told the Gunnison Country Times he expects the measure to provide funding will be on the 2027 ballot.

Ferchau and district leadership will be there. All district residents are welcome. No RSVP needed.

The meeting is Monday, July 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Three Rivers Resort, 130 County Road in Almont.
