Local nonprofit Living Journeys is hosting the 27th Annual Summit Hike on Saturday, July 25 at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. For nearly three decades, this beloved community tradition has united families, friends, cancer survivors, caregivers and supporters to celebrate life and honor loved ones by walking alongside each other on Crested Butte Mountain. The well-recognized peak overlooks the ski area and symbolizes the beloved mountain community.
Summit Hike is the centerpiece of Living Journeys Summit Weekend and serves as both a powerful fundraiser and an inspiring gathering of hope and resilience. In 2025, summit hikers represented 22 different states. Participants may choose to hike the entire 9.9-mile route from the ski area base to the 12,162-foot summit, take the Silver Queen chairlift and enjoy a shorter 2-mile summit hike, or simply ride the chairlift to enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery and join the celebration afterward.
“Every year, the Summit Hike brings together hundreds of people united by love, remembrance and hope,” says Living Journeys Executive Director Julie Reid. “Whether you hike in honor of a loved one, in memory of someone you miss or simply to stand beside your neighbors, your participation helps ensure that local individuals and families receive the support they need throughout their cancer journey.”
Following the hike, participants are invited to gather for a celebratory lunch and silent auction at the base area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, where hikers, volunteers, sponsors and supporters share stories and enjoy the camaraderie that has defined the event for 27 years. Many tackle the hike with family and friends, coordinate team outfits, and wear at least a little bit of bling in pure Crested Butte style.
Summit Weekend festivities begin on Thursday, July 23 with the Summit Soirée, an elegant outdoor dinner and live auction at Town Ranch in Crested Butte. Guests will be treated to fine dining, hear inspiring stories of resilience and have opportunities to support Living Journeys through live and silent auctions. All funds raised during Summit Weekend directly support Living Journeys' mission of providing essential support, resources and community connection to individuals and families impacted by cancer in Gunnison County.
Registration is open for the Summit Hike along with opportunities for volunteers and sponsors. Participants are invited to help raise money for Living Journeys through an individual peer-to-peer fundraising platform that is launched upon registration. Registration includes breakfast goodies, community lunch and base area celebration, a lift ticket and a commemorative event swag bag.
