Some buildings in Gunnison hold more than history — they hold the life of a community. At 102 South Main Street, the Gunnison Arts Center is proud to care for one of downtown’s most enduring landmarks.
Built in 1882, this historic building has served many purposes over the years, from a freight office and hotel for the Rio Grande Railroad to the Gunnison Hardware-Klinkerhaus, before becoming the creative home it is today.
Now, more than 140 years later, the building continues to serve the Gunnison Valley in one of its most meaningful roles yet, as a place for art, learning, gathering and connection. It is home to classes, exhibitions, performances and events that bring people together across generations and interests. In a small town like ours, we know how special it is to have a space like this in the heart of Main Street.
The Gunnison Arts Center is committed to caring for this remarkable structure. Recent restoration work to the stone, woodwork, windows, fixtures and structural elements reflects that commitment and helps preserve both its beauty and function for years to come.
With new signs now marking the building, we are also proud to better represent all that happens inside these historic walls.
We feel incredibly lucky to have this facility, and we hope it continues to serve Gunnison for another 100 years and beyond.
We hope you will step inside and experience it for yourself, whether at a free First Friday Art Walk, a monthly Art Jam, a class, an exhibition or by seeing a play. You can also pick up our summer catalog to see what is coming next. This old building still has plenty of life in it.
The Gunnison Arts Center is part of the Gunnison Country Times sponsored content program called Spotlight.
