Athletes of all ages will have an opportunity to swim, bike and run through the heart of the Valley when the annual Gunnison Valley Triathlon returns Saturday, August 22.
Hosted by the Gunnison Parks and Recreation Department, the family-friendly event has become a late-summer tradition, drawing seasoned triathletes, first-time competitors and local families to the Gunnison Recreation and Aquatics Center at 200 Spencer Ave. The race offers divisions for adults, youth and relay teams, making it one of the valley's most inclusive athletic events.
The sprint triathlon begins with a 500-yard swim inside the Community and Aquatics Center pool before competitors transition to a 14.5-mile bike ride using paved bike paths and County Road 730. The event concludes with a 4-mile run along the scenic Van Tuyl Trail system, where participants cross the finish line at the Community Center.
For younger athletes, organizers will once again offer a Kids Triathlon with age-appropriate divisions for children ages 3 to 14. Team relay events also allow three participants to divide the swim, bike and run segments, providing an option for those who want to experience the race without completing all three disciplines themselves.
The race is also expected to bring family members, volunteers and spectators together throughout the day. Following the competition, participants can enjoy an awards ceremony, refreshments and a post-race celebration featuring food and beverages.
Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division, and every registered participant receives a commemorative event T-shirt.
The event highlights Gunnison's growing reputation as an outdoor recreation destination, where community events often blend competitive sports with opportunities for families to spend time together.
Adult competitors must be at least 15 years old, while youth participants are grouped by age. Registration remains open ahead of race day, although entry fees increase after certain registration deadlines. Organizers encourage athletes to register early and review course information before arriving on race day.
