On Sept. 18, the City of Gunnison held their 5th annual Welcoming Week community soccer tournament at 6 pm at Katy O. Rady soccer field at Western Colorado University.
Welcoming Week is an initiative brought together through the City of Gunnison, Chamber of Commerce, Gunnison County, and more to bring together neighbors and build strong connections. There’s no better way to build friendships and long lasting relationships than through friendly competition.
Four community made teams showed up to compete in the tournament. Team Big Green was made up of Western Students. Team City of Gunny which featured Mayor Plata, Gunnison Police, city staff, Gunnison Valley Health, and other public officials. Teams Atlas and United were made up of community members, but their skills weren’t to be taken lightly.
Team United took home the championship that night, and were awarded a trophy donated by CJMTZ Painting, LLC.
Each team gave their all to each game they played and each competitor and observer had a great time. Even though Team United took home the trophy, every team took home a sense of pride, teamwork, and community.
