Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport to conduct emergency drill Wednesday, May 20

Posted

Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC), in coordination with local emergency response agencies, will conduct a live emergency drill on Wednesday, May 20, from approximately 2 to 4 p.m.

This full-scale exercise is required by the Federal Aviation Administration and is conducted once every three years to ensure airport personnel and emergency responders are prepared to respond effectively in the event of an airport emergency. Importantly, the airport’s commercial flight schedule is not expected to be impacted.

Community members should expect to see increased emergency vehicle activity near the airport before, during, and shortly after the exercise. A controlled fire will be part of the training scenario, and smoke will be visible in the area surrounding the airport.

Residents are asked not to call 911 regarding the smoke, emergency vehicles, or activity associated with the drill unless there is a true emergency unrelated to the exercise.

The areas expected to experience the most emergency vehicle traffic include:

  • County Road 38
  • Rio Grande Avenue
  • South Wisconsin Street

Traffic control signs will be posted, and local law enforcement personnel will assist with directing traffic and notifying the public that the activity is part of a planned training exercise.

Gunnison County Emergency Management will provide updates through social media once the drill has concluded.

The exercise is an important opportunity for airport staff and emergency response partners to practice coordinated emergency response procedures in a realistic environment. The community’s patience and cooperation is appreciated while this required training takes place. Thank you in advance for your support as local agencies work together to maintain emergency preparedness and public safety.
