Gunnison County will enter Stage 2 fire restrictions effective at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, due to high fire danger, Gunnison County Emergency Management announced.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, open burning and campfires are prohibited. Only devices powered by pressurized liquid or gas—such as stoves, grills or lanterns—with shut-off valves are permitted.

Additional information regarding these restrictions is available below and on the Gunnison County Emergency Management website at gunnisoncounty.org/1121/Current-Fire-Restrictions.

The following activities are prohibited under Stage 2 restrictions:

  • Fireworks: All personal use of fireworks.

  • Campfires and Grills: Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire or stove fire. This includes charcoal grills, barbecues, coal- and wood-burning stoves, and sheepherder’s stoves, even within developed camping and picnic grounds. (Note: Charcoal grills, hibachis, and coal- or wood-burning stoves are always prohibited on federal land.)

  • Smoking: Smoking cigarettes, cigars or other tobacco products, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or trailer.

  • Open Flames: Welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with an open flame.

  • Off-Road Vehicle Use: Possessing or operating any standard or off-road motor vehicle off established roads, motorized trails or designated parking areas. Parking is permitted only in areas devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle.

  • Explosives: Using explosive targets, fuses, blasting caps, fireworks, rockets, tracers or incendiary devices.

  • Agricultural Burning: All agricultural burns.

  • Chainsaws: Operating a chainsaw unless it uses an approved spark-arresting device, a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher (8 ounces or larger by weight, kept with the operator) and a round-point shovel at least 35 inches long.

  • Internal Combustion Engines: Operating or using any internal combustion engine (such as a generator or ATV) without a properly installed, maintained and effective spark-arresting device. The device must meet either U.S. Forest Service Standard 5100-1a or Society of Automotive Engineers recommended practices J335(b) and J350(a).
