The Gunnison Arts Center is preparing for a summer packed with performances, concerts, markets and community celebrations designed to showcase local talent and inspire creativity across the valley.
“This summer is about honoring where we’ve been while making room for what’s next,” Center Administrator and Event Coordinator Nieset LeFevre said.
“Creating space for local artists, new ideas and unforgettable summer days and nights that bring our community together and inspire creativity in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.”
Among the season’s highlights is “An Immersive Drag Experience” on June 12, featuring local drag kings and queens, many performing solo for the first time. Presented in partnership with Gunnison Valley Pride, the event celebrates queer art, performance and community connection.
The Gunnison Arts Center’s recurring Sunni Gunni Art Markets on June 20, July 18, Aug. 28 and Sept. 26, spotlight about 15 local artists each market. Monthly AND Series events, typically held on the third Thursday of each month, pair art classes with themed cocktails through experiences such as watercolor and wine nights.
Music and performance events continue throughout the summer with Sundays @ 6 concerts at Legion Park featuring live music, food trucks and vendors.
July 25 will bring the Caleb Lewis Talk Show & Comedy/Music Night, featuring games, prizes, live music and surprise conga lines hosted by local performer Caleb Lewis.
The center will also host the Local Vocals Concert on Aug. 8, showcasing regional singer-songwriters including Chris Coady, Bill Dowell and Eliza Thorp. Later in the month, the inaugural “Moonlight in the Mountains” burlesque showcase will combine comedy, theatrical flair and live performance.
The summer lineup also includes auditions for “Cats the Musical” in late August, along with Western Colorado University’s 125th anniversary block party Aug. 28 on South Main Street featuring art, music and community festivities.
