Business Spotlight: 'SonofaGunn' returns to the Blue Box Theatre with a decades-long legacy of laughter

The Gunnison Arts Center is preparing to settle a long-standing local score with the production of its signature fundraiser, “SonofaGunn.”

This year’s show, titled “Valley Feud,” pits “Up Valley” against “Down Valley” in a satirical clash of class. Directed by Shelly Pierson and Paul Giberson, the musical explores the shenanigans of mountain life and the rumors that fly faster than a winter storm on Monarch Pass.

The production, which serves as the Arts Center’s largest annual fundraiser, opens the last weekend of February and continues through the first weekend of March in the historic Blue Box Theatre.

Since its debut in 1989, “SonofaGunn” has become a staple of the Gunnison Valley winter. The concept was first brought to life by Suzanne Channell, the organization’s first executive director, and writer George Sibley. Channell, who recently returned to Gunnison, will attend this year’s production to see the legacy she helped start with the 1990 debut, “Gone With the Water.”

Whether new to the valley or a generational family, this event is a chance to laugh at the ludicrosity of small-town living.

A cast and crew of 28 volunteers are donating their time to the production. This year’s event also features an exclusive merchandise drop, including custom hoodies and beanies printed by Copper Owl Designs.

The GAC bar will lean into the theme, serving specialty drinks like the “Up-Valley Class Martini” alongside “Down-Valley Trash” beer-and-shot pairings.

Shows are scheduled to take place Feb. 26-28 and March 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. for Saturday matinees.

Tickets are available now at gunnisonartscenter.org. This year’s sponsors are Christopher Klein Construction, Marios and the Dive, Off Center Designs, Ther Paper Clip, The Gunnison Valley Health Foundation and Copper Owl Design Company.

Gunnison Arts Center is part of the Gunnison Country Times sponsored content program called Spotlight.
