Business Spotlight: Spring at the Gunnison Arts Center — Creativity, connection and community wellbeing

Posted

This spring, the Gunnison Arts Center is full of opportunities to gather, create and reconnect — which feels especially meaningful right now.

I recently attended Colorado’s first Arts & Health Convening, where researchers shared data showing what many of us know intuitively: the arts support wellbeing.

Studies linked arts participation to stronger social connection, reduced isolation and improved mental health across ages. In other words, the arts are not just enriching — they are essential to healthy communities.

At the Gunnison Arts Center, we see that every day. We see it in a child stepping into a dance class, a teen discovering confidence on stage, an adult trying ceramics or neighbors gathering for a shared cultural experience. The arts help us connect, express ourselves and find belonging.

That’s why I am excited for our spring lineup.

Dance classes are starting again for ages 2 to 102, with offerings including ballet, tap, hip hop, beginning yoga, shuffle dance, line dance, ballroom and open Friday night dance events. Youth ages 8–13 can take part in Broadway Bound, and our spring visual arts offerings include wheel throwing, Apres Clay: Bird Feeders, block printing, wildflower watercolors, alcohol ink workshops and more! (Tuition assistance is available for all classes.)

We also look forward to a three-night run of Falls for Jodie, a two-person play directed by Skyler Matthias. Live theater remains a powerful shared experience, and we are excited to bring this work to our stage.

Lastly, one of our most anticipated gallery openings, the Gunnison High School Junior and Senior Excellence Art Students Annual Showcase, opens Friday, April 3, from 5 – 7 p.m.

At a time when so many are looking for connection, inspiration and ways to care for one another, the arts matter. We hope you’ll join us.

Gunnison Arts Center is part of the Gunnison Country Times sponsored content program called Spotlight.
