Tucked deep in the mountains near Cimarron, Arrowhead Mountain Lodge has long been known for its scenic beauty, rustic hospitality and one enduring local legend: Cowboy Jim.
Around Arrowhead, stories about Cowboy Jim are shared with a grin and a touch of mystery.
Guests and locals alike tell tales of missing keys, misplaced tools and coffee cups mysteriously changing tables when no one was looking. One visitor even recalled a cast-iron skillet disappearing during a breakfast rush, only to later be discovered hanging from a nearby fence post.
“You know … that was probably Cowboy Jim,” the stories often begin.
Cowboy Jim is remembered fondly as a rugged mountain character who embodied an earlier era of Colorado life. Described as hardworking, independent and playful, he became woven into the identity of Arrowhead itself, alongside the aspens, snowstorms and the waters of Little Blue Creek flowing beside the lodge.
That spirit continues this summer at Arrowhead Mountain Lodge and Little Blue Tavern with the launch of the Al Fresco Cowboy Jim Brunch Series beginning the week after Father’s Day.
Held on the patio overlooking Arrowhead’s great lawn each Sunday, the brunch series will feature live music, mountain-inspired brunch favorites and a relaxed atmosphere designed to encourage guests to slow down and reconnect.
Families gathered on the lawn, children playing beneath Gunnison County skies and music drifting through the aspens are all part of the experience organizers hope to create.
For lodge staff and longtime visitors, the brunch series is about more than food. It is a celebration of mountain traditions, shared stories and the personalities that make places memorable long after the people themselves are gone.
And around Arrowhead, many still like to believe Cowboy Jim has never completely left.
Arrowhead Mountain Lodge is part of the Gunnison Country Times sponsored content program called Spotlight.
