A new era of winter recreation has arrived at Arrowhead Mountain Lodge, where a sprawling 30-kilometer trail network developed by Arrowhead Nordic is transforming the high-altitude landscape into a premier destination for Nordic enthusiasts.
The trail system offers roughly 24 kilometers of groomed terrain that winds through high-altitude meadows and dense aspen groves, catering to both classic and skate skiers, as well as snowshoers.
“Arrowhead’s terrain, snow quality and proximity to Montrose and Gunnison created a unique opportunity,” said Micah McKee, director of Arrowhead Nordic.
While the lodge has historically been a hub for motorized sports, the expansion into Nordic skiing marks a shift toward broader winter access.
The terrain serves a diverse demographic, from local families and beginners to collegiate athletes seeking altitude training. For a memorable climb, McKee recommended the black-diamond “Black Beard” trail, which winds through aspens to two scenic overlooks with views stretching more than 70 miles on clear days.
All trail development, grooming and maintenance have been volunteer-driven. The lodge provides access to its snowcat, while the nonprofit Arrowhead Nordic operates as the financial sponsor under the Montrose Community Foundation. All trail pass and membership revenue goes directly back into maintaining and improving the system.
“That integration of skiing and a full-service lodge creates a fantastic opportunity,” McKee said. “Guests can ski directly from the front door and then return for a chef-prepared meal or warm drink.”
Visitors are encouraged to check the Arrowhead Nordic Facebook page for daily grooming reports and dress for rapidly changing high-altitude conditions.
