GHS girls golf hosted its only home tournament of the season on Monday at Dos Rios. Due to weather, the golf season starts and ends later than other high school sports, which means they still have two weeks to qualify for state.

Head Coach Kevin Mickelson said the plan from the beginning of the season still stands.

“Our overall goal has never wavered — we want to qualify for state as a team,” Mickelson said.

The weather on Monday was one of the warmest yet, balmy but cloudy. Overall the team placed second, shooting a collective 295 for the day. The Cowboys were defeated by Montrose, a 4A team, which finished with a 276. Third place was occupied by Palisade, another 4A school, who finished with a 299.

The top individual GHS golfer was Blue Noble, with their best score of the year, having finished with a 93. They took fourth overall. Riley Murphy was close behind them, shooting a 94. Sam Brown shot 108, Allie Schwartz finished with 115 and Elaina Dillard ended with 141.

On the surface, a home tournament should mean an advantage, but Mickelson says it comes along with its own challenges.

“It can be tough playing at home in front of parents and friends,” he said. “It sometimes brings added pressure.”

Overall, though, Mickelson says Monday’s tournament proved a good step in the season.

“I’m proud of their efforts,” he said. “The big takeaway is that we are continuing to improve.”

The tournament signifies the home stretch for the season. Twice over the next two weeks, the Cowboys will travel to Alamosa for tournaments. The first is a standard tournament, but the second is the regional qualifiers.

“We are going to treat the tournament this week in Alamosa like a practice round to get prepared for the regional event,” Mickelson said.

The regional tournament runs from May 23-24, and next week, May 30-31, is state.
