What happened to paying respect to families?

Our family recently lost one of our sweet ladies at the age of 89. She was buried at the Powderhorn cemetery where our family all lived since the 1800’s. Our family is very much natives to the valley. I reached out to Sheriff Murdie a couple days before the graveside ceremony and asked if we could get a patrol escort through town to the Lake City Bridge.

Sheriff Murdie said: “You bet. We are glad to do it for your family.”

We all appreciated the honor of having them do that for us. Now to the part I am appalled by: People turned into the funeral line constantly through town, with no consideration of what this line of cars was.

What happened to honoring a hearse by pulling over to give respect?

People today forget about what this means to a family to be giving their family member her ride to her final resting place. Even where we live, in the San Luis Valley, people respect this tradition and respect each other. Sorry to beat up Gunnison, but it’s sure not the community our family came to back in the 1800s.

Sheriff Murdie, you are a great man. Thank you sir for what you did for our family.
