Editor:
Welcome to the new editor of the Gunnison Country Times, John Waters. Anyone who has done
newspaper time in Terlingua and Crestone should be able to negotiate the Gunnison-Crested Butte valley just fine.
But this is a final plea to the independent/unaffiliated voters, and to Democrats and Republicans frustrated with the current sad state of the two-party system: please cast your vote for Phil Weiser for Colorado's next governor.
Based on their policy plans for Colorado, it seems like it would hardly make any difference which of the two gubernatorial candidates wins the primary, since they are both advocating for the same things, the things we would expect them to be advocating for, and we know how all that usually works out when the rubber hits the road.
What we need to pay serious attention to, instead, in this year's election, is which candidate will make the strongest stand for our demi-democratic system of governance grounded in the rule of law, against the very real anti-democratic authoritarian system of Donald Trump who ignores the rule of law.
Here we have some evidence to bring to the voting booth. As Colorado's Attorney General, Phil Weiser has shown both leadership and collaborative strength in his participation with other state Attorneys General, in challenging Trump's assaults on the rule of law in the courts, with many successes.
His opponent expresses frustration with his inability as part of the Senate minority to be effective against Trump's assaults as part of his reason for wanting to be Colorado's governor instead, where he believes he could be more effective in opposition. This would be more believable had he, say, stood up in the Senate like Senator Booker and told the nation what was happening and his frustration at that.
Don't get tangled up in which candidate is going to do more for 'affordability'; there is going to be no way to make life in America more affordable until we corral and contain the phenomenon of Trump. And Phil Weiser is our proven battle-tested soldier there.
