Editor:
As I sit here writing this, it is the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on our capitol. It was the first time in the history of this great country that domestic fanatics attacked the elected representatives of our government in an attempt to seat an unelected president. At the time, it was declared an “insurrection” by the Republican leader of the Senate and the Republican Speaker of the House called it his “saddest day” in Congress. Our current President calls it a “day of love.”
In the almost successful coup, at least five people died, more than 140 law enforcement officers were wounded, some gravely, and several died later, some by suicide. About 1,500 attackers were eventually charged with crimes, one of the largest federal prosecutions in the history of the country. On his first day in office last year, President Trump pardoned every single one of those sentenced.
We cannot forget the incredible courage displayed by those brave law enforcement defenders of our democracy and the rule of law. We must honor them by remaining ever vigilant in protecting our freedoms and speaking truth to power.
