VA Western Colorado Health Care System Mobile Medical Unit brings healthcare to veterans’ doorsteps

Posted

For many veterans living in Western Colorado, reaching traditional healthcare facilities  can be a significant challenge. Long and difficult trips to hospitals in Montrose or Grand  Junction are often the norm, leaving many veterans without the care they need. Enter  the VA Western Colorado Health Care System’s Mobile Medical Unit (MMU), a mobile  clinic that delivers high-quality primary care directly to veterans’ neighborhoods,  including communities like Gunnison. By providing convenient, localized care, the MMU  helps veterans maintain their health without the hassle of extensive travel.

The MMU is not just a stopgap measure, it offers a wide range of healthcare services  tailored specifically for veterans. Through one-on-one telehealth consultations, veterans  can connect with their primary care providers from the comfort of their own  communities. This service is complemented by the presence of skilled nurses who are  available for blood pressure checks, medication box assistance, and answering general  health questions. Regular monitoring of weight and vital signs is also conducted to  support ongoing wellness.

Moreover, the MMU provides essential vaccinations, including flu, shingles, and tetanus  shots, although it is recommended to call ahead to confirm vaccine availability. For  added convenience, lab work is performed directly at the unit, and prescription renewals  are managed onsite. Routine procedures such as ear cleanings and health screenings  are offered as part of preventive care, and medical equipment can be ordered and  delivered directly to veterans’ homes. Additionally, veterans can self-refer for audiology  and podiatry appointments in their local areas, making specialized care more accessible  than ever.

The MMU is accessible to all veterans who are enrolled in VA health care. Those  interested in transferring their services to the MMU can simply contact their VA primary  care team. For veterans not yet enrolled, the process can be initiated by calling  877-222-8387. Veterans need to be sure to have their DD214 available.

The MMU travels across Western Colorado, servicing communities like Gunnison,  Edwards, Nucla, Rangely, and Montezuma Creek. The unit follows a detailed schedule  to ensure regular visits to multiple communities: Edwards on the first Tuesday and  Wednesday of every odd month at Vail Mountain Rescue; Nucla on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of every even month at V.F.W Uranium Post 9058; Gunnison on the 2nd Tuesday and Wednesday of every month at the American Legion Post 54; Rangely on the third Tuesday and Wednesday of every month at Rangely Area Chamber of Commerce; and Montezuma Creek, UT on the fourth Tuesday and  Wednesday of every odd month at Utah Navajo Health System. This strategic  scheduling ensures that veterans in various regions have consistent access to essential  healthcare services.

Veterans assigned to the MMU can schedule or cancel appointments by calling  970-263-2829. When visiting the unit, it is important to bring an updated medication list,  a living will (if not already on file), recent blood pressure readings, and any hospital  discharge documentation.

By bringing healthcare directly to veterans where they live, the Mobile Medical Unit is  breaking down significant barriers to care. This innovative approach is more than just a  convenience; it is a lifeline for veterans who might otherwise go without necessary  medical attention. The MMU ensures that veterans can focus on what matters most— living healthy, fulfilling lives.
