On June 9, Gunnison’s U12 softball team nearly pulled off a comeback against fierce rival Montrose. The girls lost 15-9 in three innings.
Gunnison started the first inning with an early deficit with Gunnison pitcher Parker Spann taking the mound. A total of five Montrose runners made it across home to start the game leading 5-0. Despite the difficult start, Hanna Bryja drew a walk to get the home offense started before being helped home by Emma Stanley.
Montrose again put five runs on the board in the second inning, leaving Gunnison with a massive mountain to climb at 10-1. Despite the setbacks, Gunnison fought back slowly with runners Abby Willis, Olivia Schellenberg and Maddison Reycraft all finding success at the plate and loading the bases. Parker Spann, McKenna Singer and Emma Stanley also starred at the plate, and three Gunnison girls scored, whittling down Montrose’s lead to 10-4.
The third inning ended with Montrose enforcing the 5-run inning rule, and ending the last inning up 15-4. Gunnison faced its final stand in the bottom of the third, and slowly began to rally. Leadoff batter Hazel Fitzgerald smoked a double to get the team going, followed by Lillian McElyea, Olivia Schellenberg, Maddison Reycraft and Parker Spann all getting on base and eventually making it home safe.
Despite scoring five runs in the third and enforcing the 5-run rule, Gunnison finished the game with a 15-9 defeat. The Gunnison U12 softball team's next home games will be held during the Diamonds in the Rockies tournament June 13-14 at Jorgensen Park.
