After nearly 45 years of devoted service to the Gunnison Valley, Sue Noone is retiring. Noone helped grow ABBA Eye Care into what it is today. After being hired in February 1981, Noone helped care for community members with a gentle reliance that no one is able to forget.
“Every morning when she gets up, it’s game on,” said her husband Steve Mills. Sue and Steve married in October after 26 years together and are beginning their retirement as newlyweds. “We’re on a constant honeymoon. If we’re going to do something, we’re going to do it together,” Mills said with pride.
Noone has served as both optician and manager at ABBA.
“It always amazes me the connection she makes with so many people,” Mills said. “Over the years she’s just made this really unusual bond with people and they look forward to seeing her. When she sits down with people it’s like meeting with an old friend.”
Noone built relationships with community members beyond their eye care, treating every patient like family.
“She was really nervous about retirement,” Mills said.
While she said she will miss her patients and her practice, Noone is looking forward to this next chapter. Retirement means more time with her children and grandchildren who reside in the Denver area, and filling her extra moments with her other passions.
This winter Sue and Steve will be taking their RV to Tucson, Arizona, chasing the sunshine and some well-earned adventure.
“Hopefully there will be somebody that’ll be able to fill her shoes, but it’s gonna be a tough one,” Mills said.
Noone’s last day at ABBA is Jan. 22.
