In late 2019, Lane Kersting started Rocky Mountain Dyno and Powersports with nothing more than a chassis dynamometer toolbox, $400 and a simple goal: provide reliable, honest service for any powersports or automotive vehicle customers brought through the door.
Initially operating out of his father-in-law’s ranch outside Gunnison, Kersting worked out of his truck to service local recreational rental fleets. By summer 2020, the business had outgrown the ranch’s driveway, prompting a move into town. But Kersting said it didn’t take long to outgrow this location, too.
Having navigated rapid growth pains, RMD Powersports has transformed into a premier, cutting-edge dealership and full-service shop.
The business offers new machines, service and repair work, plus gear, parts and accessories — all backed by what Kersting called “an incredibly experienced, rockstar team.”
“Our goal of being the best at what we do has not changed,” Kersting said. “Through all that growth, we kept a few things in mind — do the right thing regardless of the situation and always put the customer first.”
Living up to its motto, “Adventure Starts Here: Machines, Parts, Gear, All in One Place,” the fast-expanding business now operates two Colorado locations.
The Buena Vista store, purchased April 1, 2026, focuses more heavily on dealership operations, while the Gunnison location continues its service-oriented approach while adding OEM brands including Arctic Cat, CFMOTO, Sherco and Beta.
To celebrate the Buena Vista expansion, RMD Powersports is hosting a Grand Opening and Spring Sale this summer.
The event kicks off in Buena Vista before moving to Gunnison the following week, featuring heavily marked-down clearance items and competitive pricing on new parts and gear.
