Gunnison has only about 100 homes with residential solar due to some of the challenges of funding and installing solar for individual homeowners. This is a shame given the solar potential here in the valley.
Now there will be another way for people who want to have solar, without the high cost and permitting requirements. It is referred to as balcony solar but you don't necessarily need a balcony. The Colorado legislature passed HB26-1007, one of the strongest bills for these systems, allowing up to 1.9 kW of solar without any permits required. You just need a standard 20-amp, 120-volt circuit and the low-cost systems plug directly into this outlet. That's it — you are now generating and using your own electricity, before pulling any from the grid. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.
