Indianapolis – The 46th annual Midwest Classic closed Sunday with Western Colorado wrestling placing 22nd out of 47 teams with 41.5 points.

The Mountaineers had five wrestlers compete in consolation brackets Sunday after advancing from Saturday’s rounds.

Vincent Cabral posted the highest finish for Western, taking sixth place in the 157-pound bracket.

Cabral began his morning with a 4-1 decision in the fifth round and advanced again with a 13-6 decision in the sixth round. He followed with a 15-7 major decision, but his run slowed in the consolation semifinal with a loss to No. 11 Nico Taddy of West Liberty University. That pushed Cabral into the fifth-place match, where No. 12 Mike Zacur of Seton Hill earned a major decision to put Cabral on the podium in sixth place.

Devin Gomez also earned a podium finish for the Mountaineers, placing eighth in the 133-pound bracket.

Gomez posted an 8-4 decision in the fifth consolation round, then followed that with a 21-8 major decision in the next round. A loss by technical fall, however, relegated Gomez to the seventh-place match, where he dropped a 12-6 decision for an eighth-place finish.

Eyan Chavez won his fifth-round consolation match with an 8-5 sudden-victory decision, but his tournament ended in the sixth round with a narrow 4-0 decision loss to No. 4 Isham Peace of Lander.

Western’s other wrestlers also saw their runs ended by nationally ranked opponents.

In the 184-pound bracket, Hunter Richardson dropped a 7-3 decision to No. 15 Brady Westall of Northern State in the fifth round. In the 197-pound bracket, Sage Harrison lost his fifth-round bout to No. 13 Jordan Blanchard of Wisconsin-Parkside, the eventual team champion.
